5 out of 5 stars Absolutely no issues...   January 2, 2010

I purchased these drives directly from Amazon at the $69 price, not from other online affiliates like Tiger.

I have purchased three of these drives and several other Hitachi models over the years. I have had zero issues with them - no bad sectors, no drive failures! All very positive.

As the technology evolves, platter density increases and consumer installations become more prevalent, there will be higher reports of issues. It is simply a statistical fact. I have experienced issues with both Western Digital and Seagate drives although both companies did replace the units with no questions asked. But I can honestly say that even from from the days of IBM involvement with Hitachi, I have never had a problem with this brand of drives. I own models going back as far as 2002 (20GB) that have never had even a bad sector.

I am sorry to read the previous bad review here on Amazon but drives do fail and it can be very traumatic to lose valuable data. It just has not been my experience with these drives. Of 61 current reviews on the "Egg" for the same drive, 95% are positive (50 five star, 8 four star and 1 three star).

Perhaps I have just been lucky! Hitachi has earned my loyalty.

BTW, the "Egg" sells these for $20 to $30 more depending on the day. Amazon lately has had the best prices on all computer accessories including Apple products.

5 out of 5 stars Great Hard Drive for Raid 5 Setup   October 26, 2009

I built a Linux Raid Server using 4 - 2tb Hitachi HD32000 Hard Drives in Raid 5 configuration. I then used two Seagate 250gb in Raid 1 for the Linux OS. This setup works great. I wanted to use the Seagate 1.5tb but there are problems with the firmware and Raid 5 configurations. The Hitachi's on the other hand have worked perfectly. I would recommend this to anyone building a solid Raid 5 setup looking for the best combination perfomance & value per tb.

5 out of 5 stars So far very nice despite OLD negative reviews...   April 2, 2010

First thing I want to point out is I am reviewing 2 new 2TB Hitachi SATA drives. No where in description, nor on the box does it say SATA-2/3GB. But yes, they are SATA-2 for sure. On the drive label it is marked SATA 3.0 GB/s, RPM: 7200RPM. So there you have it, true SATA-2 drives.

Next issue I've read in various reviews including these 2TB drives is that they are noisey and enabling aucoustic control (I know I forgetting the exact name and should list the command but at the moment escapes me). It was suggested to reduce these "loud" drives. Well, from being used to WD, Seagate and the other main brands of HDD makers, these are drives, especially for 2TB each are no more noisey then my WD250GB, WD500, Seagate & WD 1TB's and other older SATA drives. That being said, to be honest, they are fairly quiet.

Another issue. Heat. I read these run hot. Well in running a whole bunch of SATA1 & 2 drives on my systems, 2 different releases (looks and all) of WD250GB with the same part code from different years dissipate heat differently. My WD500GB SATA2 runs fairly cool, as do both my WD Black and Seagate 1TB drives. I will say I think the WD1TB runs a bit cooler than the older 1TB Seagate. But compared to my older 2 identical 200GB Seagates and the older 250GB WD, these Hitachi 2TB drives run much cooler. Note: tests were done under full loads of moving files, stressing these Hitachi drives out with multi-tasking copying from older drives. They got about as warm as my 1TB drives.

So, maybe older versions from Hitachi ran louder and hotter then what I received from Amazon (Retail Boxed drives). So far pulling out my older 2x200GB drives from the case for these was like gaining 3.6TB more HDD room. I paid a little more than what I see listed now, but don't regret it.

In all my usage of name brands I have primarily used Western Digital and Seagate. Heck my oldest HDD I have left is a SCSI 500MB Seagate drive that NEVER had one single problem and still works perfectly. I've had with these two brands, 7 or more WD's go bad or die flat out. 1 Seagate slowly went south, got a new one RMA'd years later after warranty and still was able to recover about 98% data off it before mailing it off. WD, still never fufilled my dead/or chock full of bad sectors/wrecked platter or head gone bad a knocking, replaced. WD CS Dept isn't so good, in my opinion..Fujitsu and Hitachi not so much experieced with. But so far so good. No problems. I won't buy from Samsung because they wasted about half a year on fixing a newly bought LCD monitor that died (power death), recieved a trashy replacement in a week, sent it back and took almost half a year to get the one I am on now. And it's scratched up. So, my appoligies for drifting-Samsung is out permantly for me. People have their favorite brands, I tend to stick with Seagate..being as they were (and I think still are) the leaders in SCSI high-speed drives. Sure they had a slump and sold off IDE 160GB drives for dirt cheap left and right, but they worked well. So I bought alot of SATA drives from them.

Now back to these Hitachi drives. They have been hot-swapped, stuck in enclosures for both USB and eSATA as well as a docking station. Sure they took a while to full clean new format. Some posted alot of DOA drives on the egg of these and when they worked, used slow formats and got alot of bad sectors. So with these I formatted them NTFS sloooow format, with CRC error checking. Both came up 100% fully working. So I put them through some stress tests as mentioned. Both work as would expect, quiet and fast 3GB/ps (SATA-II). Hot-swapping works flawlessly with these and they will be mounted in my case soon. Had to rebuild Vista x64 Ultimate due to an uninstallable SP2 beta problem (by the way, MS never sent me any notice of a SP2 uninstall tool nor notified me when SP2 final was available, as others have reported also happened with "Auto-Update" turned on, Genuine Auth Utility etc). So NOW with a fresh clean install of Windows, I decided to remove the old 2x200GB drives (will go to another older system) and put these 2x 2TB Hitachi drives in. Oh also of notice, I have all my SATA drives outside my case at the moment. I noticed some drives under pressure would 'bump' the desk I'm on, as in I could physically feel a slight movement of activity. These Hitachi drives do not at all.

I would say for the price, the storage and that they are not the "new-green" problematic drives they are nice. Almost bought some WD-Green drives but went with these, and after reading the odd problems with the green drives from WD I think I made the right choice. Ok green, use a little less power, but todays SATA-2 & 3 drives are energy efficient enough. Just look at some charts, and decide are "green" drives that much worth the risk? WD sure has changed their line of Green drives alot since introduction. Some are not even compatable to systems due to using the new format system. So buyer beware, read about your drives before deciding especially larger storage like 2TB, if you use any RAID arrays etc. While I did not RAID these two 2TB Hitachi's (I rarely RAID anymore anyways), I would be confidant in say a 4x 2TB RAID Array with these. Date made are NOV 2009, Firmware 20N and don't be fooled by the "techy" specs on the case stickers vs fancy WD labels. These tell all you need to know flat out, LBA, CHS etc etc. Both made in Thailand. While the books are sparce, they are to the point. In box is drive in anti-static sealed bag w/the "candy" bags (moisture absorbant), booklet, SATA-2 Cable, 4 screws and 2 plastic retainers to hold the drive in place.

They work well, I like them, and that's what I wanted...right out of the box.

5 out of 5 stars Nice in my Drobo Raid: Affordable 2TB 7200RPM   November 30, 2009

This drive is a latecomer in the 2TB arena and doesn't have many reviews, but it is a well loved contender.

I put several of these in a Drobo Raid Enclosure and they work extremely well, maxing out the claimed read/write speeds of the enclosure. This drive is the only affordable 7200rpm 2TB drive. They also start up quickly; when you've got four of them in one enclosure, this really matters. Because of this, a lot of people buy these for raids.

The green drives are popular, but the WD and Seagates seem to have a lot of trouble running in raid configurations without flashing the firmware. They can have varying RPMs from eachother set at the factory, not good at all.

Hitachi's are a bit noisy, my only complaint. But a nice throaty sound at least.

Be sure to look up the firmware in your enclosure or desktop and make sure that it fits a drive this modern and large.

5 out of 5 stars Zero problems, Great 1TB drive!   March 3, 2010

I've running four of these Hitachi 1TB drives in a RAID 5 array, I've had zero problems so far. I only considered Hitachi or Samsung 1TB drives since Western Digital and Seagate cripple their consumer drives for RAID compatibility, google "TLER RAID" for more info. The Hitachi drives I received were the newer 7K1000.C models meaning the drive are made up of two 500GB platters and use less power than the B models. For hard drives, fewer platter means less chance of hardware failure. It's also faster compared to a 1TB made up of three 333GB platters.
