Managed Dedicated Servers and Corporate Collocation

With so many people launching their own websites for business and commercial purposes, there is this greater need to utilize managed web hosting services as opposed to shared hosting services. Make no mistake about it; there are many benefits to using shared hosting services. The number one benefit is of course, its affordability. Since there are multiple users sharing the cost of web server maintenance, prices can be offered at very, very low rates.
However, subscribing to managed hosting services is a worthwhile investment to online entrepreneurs and ecommerce minded business people. There are more benefits to using a single web hosting service.
What is managed web hosting in the first place?
This type of Internet hosting goes by a number of names, like: managed web hosting, managed dedicated servers, managed hosting, dedicated hosting services, and dedicated servers. In this type, web developers or website owners usually have full and exclusive control of the server(s) that they are utilizing. This means that they have a controlled pulse on the server hardware, software and operating system that is active in their website(s).
In some instances, web developers can even opt for server administration as well; and the server company can provide technical support on a regular basis.
What are the advantages of using this type of Internet hosting?
As stated earlier, there are more advantages to using this type of Internet hosting. A couple of which includes:
1. You can choose your own operating system and operating system support. You can either choose a Linux system (or other open source operating systems such as CentOS, Debian, Fedroa Core,) Microsoft Windows SPLA Server, and Red Hat Enterprise. Having the liberty to choose the application means you can avail of operating systems that you are most familiar with, which practically saves you time in regards to learning the ropes of a new system. Aside from that, you can also choose which OS would actually fit your budget best. If you are a bit tight with the buck, you can always go for OS that is open source technology based, because these are usually offered for free.
You can also have add-on services or support systems like: application patches, OS kernel upgrades, system extensive vulnerability resolutions, and even upgrading on the latest security fixes.
2. If you are particularly pressed for time, you can easily outsource the managerial duties for this Internet type of hosting. You can very easily hire a 3rd party service provider to do: backups and restoration; database administration; DDos (distributed denial-of-service attack) protection and mitigation; disaster recovery; DNS hosting service; firewall services; intrusion detection; load balancing; monitoring duties in regards to the server; performance tuning; programming consultation; software installation and configuration; technical support; user management; and updates on the application, antivirus programs, Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) hardware and the operating system itself.
3. Finally, since you are having exclusive control of the web server, you can use extreme security measures on your website(s.) This is particularly helpful to online based companies who rely on the gathering, storing and the encryption of large volumes of data. The Internet hosting company can very easily provide you anti-virus applications as well as scanning systems and firewall protection against possible hackers, spammers and worms.

Totally agree. Pretty useless
i setup my sftp but i cannot access it outside of the network that I am on… am i doing something wrong or is that how sftp works?
Usually its a misunderstanding about the address of the server machine. You probably are not on a dedicated IP. That means that there is an IP address for your machine that only works on the lan (others on your home network) and another IP which is the lans address to the internet.
Try going to this site.
http://whatismyip.com/
Right at the top of the page it will tell you the IP that is sees you coming from. That is the address that the people on the internet have to use to reach you.
Dedicated servers are ones that are run on a computer, but the person running them can't be on that game. You can make a lan and a regular server and play on them but dedicated servers you can't make and join, but dedicated servers are much more stable and a bit faster
you can get the high-res videos free on his website.
The switch to a dedicated server will certainly be determined by the resources consumed by your Drupal portal versus what the server can handle and not by the hits/visits. Although the two are correlated to an extent on most configurations I have worked on (more visits results in more consumed resources).
Server resources are CPU, memory, hard drive space, and bandwidth (traffic). The 200kb you mentioned relates more to bandwidth. The ones that shared providers penalize the most on are CPU and memory usage. A Drupal portal will consume a considerable amount of those two especially if you use a lot of the Drupal plugins/features.
For example, if your web hosting account consumes most resources for extended periods of time by using up a large amount of memory or peg the CPU, the provider (Hostgator in this case) will most likely suspend your account.
How do you keep track of resources that your account consumed? This is unfortunately not possible with a shared account. Shared accounts don't provide the tools necessary for you to "gauge" for resources usage. Good providers will warn you before suspending your account but don't count on that. Be on top of it. Keep historical data of visits per day and per month, etc. If you notice drastic increases in visits (20% month over month), start planning for an upgrade.
By the way, my name is Joe and I help run a fully managed dedicated server company that goes by the name UNIXy. I'll be glad to answer any question you have. Let me know if you need a hand as well. My email is joe@unixy.net.

You will be given root access to the server and you can upload your applications to your server. A dedicated server account usually allows you more bandwidth and CPU usage than a shared hosting account. You will not have the same restriction like when you are on shared server.

A dedicated server patch is a patch for dedicated server. While a client patch will fix known issues on the player's computer a server patch will fix any issues or add new features on the back end of the game.
If you want to use shared web hosting services for your website, take a look at: http://www.threehosts.com/business
There you can reach the three reputable companies that are leaders in the E-commerce web hosting industry. They fulfill all your requirements to sell online. By using each of them, everything you need for your business website is provided in one eCommerce Hosting Package.
If you intend to use a dedicated service, go to: http://www.goldpuma.com . Their dedicated web hosting plans provide all features needed for a successful online business. They have a really great offer & I have used them for over 3 yrs now, and have never had a single problem with them. Their service is really great and easy to use.
I agree with David except he left out one thing, which is speed. If your server resides in your building, you're going to be able to access it at the speed of your local network, often 100Mb or even 1Gb/s. If the server is hosted remotely, you access the files over the internet. a typical broadband internet connection is perhaps 1-5Mb/s. So in the best case scenario access to the hosted server is going to be 1/20th as fast as access to the local server.
If you're only storing and retrieving very small files and you need to do it from many remote locations, hosted is a good option. If you're mostly working from one location and use the server any more than a little bit, a local server is your best bet.
Hope this helps, and feel free to check out http://www.inovagent.com/file_servers for more information on local file servers.
Game servers come in two types:
1. Listen Server – This is when you play the game *and* you're the server at the same time, a listen server is basically when the program runs both the server and one client simultaneously.
2. Dedicated Server – All the program is doing is running the game, you can't actually play on a dedicated server unless you launch the program again and connect to it like everyone else would have to.
In Never WInter Nights, you'd only want a dedicated server if you wanted people to be able to play on your server when you're not there. You'd have to run the server yourself, so you'd be responsible for making sure it was running the right maps, the right mods etc…
Hi,
When you purchase a dedicated server, you essentially rent it from a server provider online. You never get to see the server physically because it's located in a remote data center facility. The data center facility is usually a large concrete enforced building with security officers, diesel generators, electrical equipment, and an elevated floor where the customer equipment sits.
Once you sign up for the dedicated server, you will be given a login name and password to login into the server and install the software that you need.
By the way, my name is Joe and I help run a dedicated server business (see the source box if you're interested). I hope my answer is helpful.
